Aims of Module

To develop an in depth understanding of the development of health and safety law in the United Kingdom.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the common law health and safety rules which protect employees.
2. Critically assess the development of the statutory rules relating to health and safety.
3. Assess the impact of the law of the European Union on UK law.

Indicative Module Content

Duty of care, vicarious liability history and sources of statute law in the UK governing health and safety, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, European Health and Safety Law, Framework Directive. Role of the Health and Safety Executive. Recent relevant legislation relating to Corporate Manslaughter. Landmark cases. Health and Safety Guidance Notes and Approved Codes of Practice.

The module is delivered in executive part time mode incorporating attending on campus workshops in addition to self directed learning from paper based or web-based learning materials, supported by on line assistance.
