Aims of Module

To develop understanding of the policy processes of the EU and of the ways in which interested organisations can manage their relationship with it.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the ways in which the EU impacts upon interests in civil society, and the ways in which such interests can draw benefit from the EU.
2. Discuss and evaluate the roles of the key actors and institutions in the EU policy process, and the relationships between them.
3. Analyse the models and mechanisms of European integration.
4. Evaluate the content and dynamics of topical major EU policy competencies.

Indicative Module Content

Overview of policy-making, policy actors and their roles, the decision making process, models of integration, interest representation, current issues in European Integration, and major policy and topical areas.

Mode of Delivery

Taught mode: The course will be delivered by means of lectures (including guest lectures from practitioners), seminars and group work. Topics from current issues in European integration shall be drawn from interactive use with current materials ranging from internet sources, current affairs outlets, and those available to the module leader from engagement with policy practice.
