Aims of Module
To promote an understanding of the contribution of quality and environmental management systems to the achievement of organisational effectiveness.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically assess the role and rationale behind quality and environmental management systems like ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 within organisations.
2 Critically evaluate the key requirements of ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 and be able to practice a range of advanced and specialised skills for the preparation of procedures and the completion of internal quality audits.
3 Critically evaluate the relationship between the establishment and maintenance of systems like ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and TQM and the achievement of improvement in organisations.
4 Synthesise the current operational and strategic issues in relation to quality, environmental and sustainable management systems; including proposed revisions and recent developments.

Indicative Module Content
The module will examine the following: the principles of quality management systems; quality assurance; quality control and quality improvement; quality system strategies; quality and environmental system requirements; implementing quality systems; the assessment process including first, second and third party assesments; beyond ISO 9000 and ISO 14000; TQM; integrated and single management systems; quality system developments and sustainability.

Module Delivery
On-Campus Mode: The module is delivered in On Campus Mode by lectures, interactive group work, case study tutorials and directed self-study. Online Mode: The module is delivered in Online Mode by self directed asynchronous learning from web-based learning materials, supported by synchronous seminars and/or on-line support.
