Aims of Module
To enable students to develop an in-depth knowledge of the development of EU law through Court of Justice case law; to facilitate a thorough understanding of the legal principles underpinning European integration; to enable and promote critical assessment of the central importance of the role of both Court of Justice and national judiciary in shaping the nature of EU law; to scrutinise and deconstruct the human rights basis of the EU legal order; to take account of significant issues affecting integration in Europe as they arise, such as Brexit and the Migration Crisis

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Understand the jurisprudential basis of the development of the European Union legal order.
2 Demonstrate an appreciation of the foundational legal principles of the European Union.
3 Demonstrate understanding of the role of national courts in the EU in the light of Kobler, HS2 and related case law.
4 Demonstrate an in depth knowledge of human rights law development in the European Union, taking into account the EU Charter and ECHR Accession
5 Present the acquired knowledge and understanding in a precise form using the appropriate legal language and concepts.

Indicative Module Content
Theme 1: The Foundations of the European Union legal order; the significance of the Court of Justice of the EU Theme 2: Judging Integration; national courts, the Court of Justice of the EU, Köbler, the supremacy debate Theme 3: Rights in the Union; human rights, the EU v the ECHR, The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU Theme 4: Significant developments affecting European Integration

Module Delivery
This is a lecture and seminar based module. Lectures provide core module content. Seminars develop associated higher level skills through student centred learning.

The Module is assessed by two components: C1 - Coursework - 40% weighting. C2 - Coursework - 40% weighting. C3 - Oral assignment - 20% weighting. Module Pass Mark = Grade D (40%)
Module Grade Minimum Requirements to achieve Module Grade:
A At least 70% on weighted aggregate and at least 35% in each component
B At least 60% on weighted aggregate and at least 35% in each component
C At least 50% on weighted aggregate and at least 35% in each component
D At least 40% on weighted aggregate and at least 35% in each component
E At least 35% on weighted aggregate
F Less than 35% on weighted aggregate
NS Non-submission of work by published deadline or non-attendance for examination
