| The petroleum industry brings together the most powerful public and private actors in the form of states and international oil companies (IOCs). Oil and gas law has the task of arranging the resultant relationships and of ensuring that the legitimate interests of each side are protected. This Module aims to provide students with an overview of some of the main legal issues in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) oil and gas industry today, and a basic understanding of the main actors and their respective interests. Key legal issues in oil and gas contracting in the UKCS will also be explored. The course will primarily look at these issues from the standpoint of Scots and/or English law, but at times a comparative approach with other jurisdictions will be taken. | |||

| On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
| 1 | Demonstrate a sound understanding of the evolution and complexities of the UKCS Licensing Regime; |
| 2 | Critically appraise the legal and commercial basis of oil and gas industry contractual arrangements in the UKCS; |
| 3 | Identify and critically analyse the legal rights and responsibilities of the key actors under different types of industry arrangements; |
| 4 | Critically evaluate legislation addressing marine, atmospheric and ecosystem pollution by the O and G industry in the UKCS. |

| Overview of World Petroleum Agreements; Rule of Capture: Ownership of Oil & Gas; UKCS Licensing; Introduction to Oil and Gas Contracts; Structure of CRINE/LOGIC Contracts; Legal standards: Oil & Gas UK; Renewable Energy Issues; Pollution and Environmental Regulation; Taxation; Health and Safety in the UKCS; Decommissioning Issues and the DSA/DCPD. |
