The petroleum industry brings together the most powerful public and private actors in the form of states and international oil companies (IOCs). Oil and gas law has the task of arranging the resultant relationships and of ensuring that the legitimate interests of each side are protected. This Module aims to provide students with an overview of some of the main legal issues in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) oil and gas industry today, and a basic understanding of the main actors and their respective interests. Key legal issues in oil and gas contracting in the UKCS will also be explored. The course will primarily look at these issues from the standpoint of Scots and/or English law, but at times a comparative approach with other jurisdictions will be taken. |
