Aims of Module

The aim of this module is give students an opportunity to study in-depth and engage with the concept of sustainability and sustainable practices within the global events industry.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of sustainability and sustainable practices within the events industry.
2. Outline practical indicators and tools for sustainable event management, taking into account best practice within the industry.
3. Assess the contribution green stakeholders can make to sustainable practices within the events industry, for example green exhibitors and sustainable suppliers.

Indicative Module Content

Definitions of Sustainability; Dimension of Sustainability within Events: Competitiveness, Demand Oriented, Environmentally-Friendly, Faciliites Management, Waste Management; Indicators and Tools for Sustainable Event Management; Planning Models for Creating Sustainable Events; British Standard BS8901: Sustainable Event Management; ISO 14000 Environmental Management; Best-Practice Criteria: electronic organisation, minimise carbon emissions for attendees and speakers, save energy, practice recycling, adopt environmentally-thoughtful measures; Carbon Calculator, impacts and initiatives, eg. carbon credits, event sponsor funding total event carbon debt; Sustainable Suppliers; organic, locally produced food, fairtrade labelling, like-minded exhibitors, green giveaways; Green Stakeholders: Green Tourism Business Scheme, The Carbon Trust, Foundation for Green Destinations.
