To provide a critical understanding of the key principles, practices and concepts of project management. To examine the broad project environment and apply project management tools and techniques to a simulated project. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Establish the key project planning and control activities and apply the planning and control tools and techniques in a project environment. |
2 | Examine the project life cycle and it's relationship with project activities and processes. |
3 | Discuss the five key variables of project management (cost, time, quality, scope and risk) and the trade-offs and interaction between these variables. |
4 | Establish the change management procedures and processes required for effective project management. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
The module will provide a broad overview of project management principles including the fundamental activities, tools and techniques used in managing projects. The project life cycle will be discussed and its underpinning role in managing project progress. The phases of initiation, planning, execution, control and monitoring and close out will be examined and applied to a project case which requires students to set objectives, determine scope, identify stakeholders and write a business case. An overview of project environment, change control and it's impact on managing scope, cost and schedule will be examined. Students will also be introduced to the principles of sustainable project management. |

The module is lecture based supplemented with tutorial sessions. Emphasis is based on an integrative approach to communication and learning with student involvement fostered through discussion and group working. |
