Aims of Module

To provide a comprehensive understanding of childhood obesity from a molecular level to the epidemiology of the disease, and a review of the possible preventative and treatment options appropriate for children of different ages.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the causes of childhood obesity.
2. Critically evaluate a range of possible approaches for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity.
3. Discuss the consequences of childhood obesity in epidemiological terms.
4. Critically evaluate interventions which have tackled childhood obesity.

Indicative Module Content

Childhood obesity at the molecular level. The growth of the systems and structures of the body; somatic, skeletal and sexual maturation. Environmental and cultural aspects of obesity. Epidemiological aspects of incidence and prevalence. Male and female differences in obesity and approaches to tackling it. Preventative and treatment approaches and initiatives for different settings.
