Aims of Module

To develop an understanding of the primary care environment and the burden of obesity at this level.
To provide a comprehensive awareness of the management of obesity and guidelines/programmes currently available in primary care.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the current primary care environment and frameworks for this service.
2. Critically evaluate the burden of obesity at primary care and the assessment of current obesity guidelines.
3. Critically review the management of obesity in primary care and evidence base programmes for primary care intervention.

Indicative Module Content

Limitations of management of obesity at primary care level. Impact of obesity on health resources. Primary care guidelines currently being followed. Assessment, education and treatment approaches in primary care. Programmes aimed at improving management of obesity at primary care level.(i.e.Counterweight Programme).
