Aims of Module | |||

To allow students who select this option to supplement their academic studies and gain valuable additional experience through a 1 year placement with a suitable external employer. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Identify work policies and procedures, and manage risk in the industrial setting, ensuring the health and safety of staff and service users. |
2 | Understand the organisation and its structure and how the work conducted benefits the organisation and the wider community. |
3 | Demonstrate self-awareness through reflection: evaluate strengths and weaknesses, carry out Personal Development Planning, and identify learning/training requirements. |
4 | Develop high-level research/technical skills in line with the organisation and course strategies and demonstrate critical thinking by planning, executing and evaluating the work conducted. |
5 | Acquire collaborative skills and communicate effectively with colleagues in the working environment, and further develop writing and presentation skills through the communication of the placement as a whole. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Placement activities will be carried out in the employer's premises, the employment period being at least 9 months. During the placement the student will be regarded as an employee of the placement organisation and subject to the normal conditions of employment. A range of tasks may be carried out by the student as previously agreed between the employer and the Industrial Training Tutor. In addition, students are expected to avail themselves of any additional opportunities to gain relevant experience which may arise. |
Module Delivery |

Placements will be co-ordinated and approved by the Industrial Training Tutor who will ensure that the experience and training is appropriate to the student's course of study. During the placement students will be allocated a supervisor from the employer organisation who will be responsible for the day to day work of the student. In addition, the Industrial Training Tutor or nominee will visit the student on placement to obtain an overview of the student's work and progress. Students are expected to abide by the code of conduct outlined in the Placement Handbook and keep an accurate and continuous record of work done. |
