Aims of Module

To enable the student to explain the anatomy, histology and physiology of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and digestive systems.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Identify the histological structure and functions of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and digestive systems.
2. Discuss the physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary and digestive systems.
3. Explain the functions of the integumentary, cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and digestive systems, in the maintenance of homeostasis.

Indicative Module Content

Integumentary SystemL histology, anatomy and physiology. Skeletal systemL histology and anatomy of bone, joints and ligaments, ossification, bone physiology. Muscular System: anatomy and histology of muscle, molecular, histological and anatomical events in muscle contraction. THe cardiovascular system: anatomy of heart and vessels, conduction system, cardiac cycle, homeostasis and control, lymphatic vessels and tissues. Respiratory system: anatomy and histology, volumes, respiration and its control, gas exchange and transport. Urinary system: anatomy and histology, physiological role, regulation and control. Digestive system: anatomy and histology of gastrointestinal tract and accessory organs, digestive processes.
