On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Describe the environmental factors which influence the occurrence of water-borne and air-borne diseases. |
2 | Explain the contribution of nutrient deficiencies, famine and overnutrition (obesity) to the global burden of disease. |
3 | Explain the effects of climate change on the global burden of disease. |
4 | Describe strategies designed to improve public health. |
Indicative Module Content |

Occurrence and spread of water-, air- and food-borne microbial and parasitic diseases; zoonoses; human spread of microbial and parasitic disease; malaria; cholera; dysentry; polio; HIV and AIDS; ebola virus; zika virus; vaccinations; pollution; sanitation; water-treatment strategies; smoking; asbestos; obesity; starvation; nutrient deficiencies, including endemic iodine deficiency, vitamin A deficiency; iron; alcohol; WHO; UN and UNHCR; FAO; International Red Cross; governmental approaches to promoting public health; emerging challenges to public health e.g. antimicrobial resistance (AMR), climate change, biodiversity and urbanisation. |

The first grade represents Component 1 (EX1) weighted as major and the second, Component 2 (CW1), weighted as minor. A module grade of D is required for a pass, with compensation of grade E in Component 1 or Component 2 permitted. Non-submission of either component will result in an NS grade. | |
