Aims of Module

To provide students with the ability to appraise and integrate academic theory with the practical skills required as a Registered Dietitian in professional situations, under adequate supervision and guidance, and to demonstrate appropriate interpersonal and social skills.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate appropriate clinical and practical skills within a work-based situation.
2. Demonstrate appropriate professional knowledge, attitudes, and attributes including good time-keeping, record-keeping and interpersonal skills.

Indicative Module Content

This module incorporates a range of dietetic experience in hospital and community settings as determined by the Health Professions Council (Course requirements and Guidelines for Pre-registration Courses leading to State Registration in Dietetics, Dietitians Board, November 2000).

The assessment of this module is completed by the Base Trainer in the clinical placement establishment. The assessment consists of pieces of written work and supervised assessed practice as determined by the Base Trainer and indicated in the student's individual programme. The students and their Base Trainer (tutor) carry out an ongoing review of progress and a portfolio is completed during the module.
No grade is awarded for this module. The assessment is of competence and records pass or fail.

Additional Notes

With regard to the Indicative Student Workload, the module involves supervised practical work and supporting tutorials as required. The student works the contractual hours (approximately 35 hours per week) of a registered dietitian for a period of 12 weeks. The amount of directed study is at the discretion of the Base Trainer responsible for supervising the placement. Private study is as required by the student.
