Aims of Module

To provide students with the ability to identify key elements of clinical pharmacology, drug nutrient interaction and some aspects of drug metabolism in relation to dietetic practice, and to understand the rationale for nutritional requirements and care plans for the critically ill patient.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Identify and explain the key elements of clinical pharmacology that relate to dietetic practice including the principles of drug-nutrient interactions and some aspects of drug metabolism.
2. Identify the clinical investigations and biochemical tests used to assess nutritional status and diagnose diseases that relate to dietetic practice.
3. Explain aspects of professional practice in public and private sectors, and aspects of health psychology pertinent to effective practice.
4. Calculate the nutritional requirements of a patient and plan an appropriate dietary regimen taking into account the individual circumstances.

Indicative Module Content

Clinical pharmacology, diet/drug interactions, role of the pharmacist in nutritional care, diagnostic tests, biochemical assessment of nutritional status. Treatment of patients in intensive care, burns and HIV/AIDS specialist units. Roles of other professionals. Health psychology relating to patient care.
