Aims of Module

To provide students with the ability to assess nutrient intake, to understand the rationale for the modification of nutrient intake and to apply diet therapy in the treatment of diseases and conditions. To provide students with the ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for the professional practice of dietetics and to understand the importance of various aspects of medicine in relation to nutrition and dietetics.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Obtain an accurate dietary assessment, calculate the nutritional requirements, plan appropriate nutritional care, and explain the process of objective setting in the delivery of a nutritional care plan for a client.
2. Explain the principles and practice of medicine, the principles of evidence-based practice, standards, quality assurance, audit, clinical governance and the roles of other health care professionals in relation to dietetic practice.
3. Analyse critically the theoretical knowledge base of diet therapy and integrate it into practical situations.
4. Discuss dietary treatments for a wide range of disease states and the methods available to monitor and evaluate their efficacy.
5. Explain the uses of the main types of dietetic products, the rationale for therapeutic strategies used in diet therapy and the roles of the dietitian in various healthcare settings.

Indicative Module Content

Evidence-based dietary treatment of obesity, diabetes, eating disorders, lipoproteinaemias, gastrointestinal disorders, oncology, disabling disorders, renal and liver disease. Use of dietetic products. Nutritional support, enteral and parenteral feeding. Construction of nutritional and dietetic care plans. Role of health care professionals and multidisciplinary team work, medical lectures on pregnancy, care of the elderly, gastroenterology, paediatrics, renal, eating disorders, oncology. Practical application of various prescribable products. Healthcare management and organisation of UK nutritional and dietetic services. Preparation for clinical placement.

Mode of Delivery

Lectures, tutorials, group discussions, seminars. Dietetic practice consists of role play, medical/dietetic workshops, visits to local dietetic departments, hospital wards and specialist units. These are all conducted in small groups, the practicals are also small group exercises.
