Aims of Module | |||

To provide students training in biomedical science laboratory skills and to equip them with communication, self-management and study skills. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Demonstrate competence in health & safety practice including completion of COSHH and risk assessments. |
2 | Communicate effectively through written and oral means with appreciation for data security and patient confidentiality. |
3 | Demonstrate competence in selected skills, including performing fundamental biomedical science techniques in a hospital laboratory environment and sample reception. |
4 | Reflect on the biomedical science practice of self and of others. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
This hospital based practice module will include experiential learning involving maximally supervised practice, and orientation with the healthcare laboratory departments. Attendance at appropriate meetings, opportunities for reporting and recording, completion of learning objectives defined by the HPC Standards of Proficiency, opportunities to reflect on and discuss the clinical setting, opportunities to explore personal strengths and weaknesses. Application of relevant biomedical science techniques. |
Module Delivery |

This is a work based module, which comprises a hospital based laboratory placement. Each student will undergo a pre-placement induction for the first week, followed by a six week hospital laboratory placement (35 hours per week). In addition the student will undertake 40 hours of directed reading and 50 hours of private study. |

Students on hospital based laboratory placements will normally receive at least one liaison visit from a member of academic staff to monitor student progress and integrate academic based studies with hospital laboratory experience. |
