Aims of Module

To enable the student to develop practical, analytical and communication skills in the relevant sciences.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Operate a range of analytical instruments.
2. Devise suitable experimental procedures for given tasks.
3. Demonstrate a commitment to good and safe laboratory practice.
4. Record accurately and fully the results of experimental procedures
5. Communicate the results and conclusions of given experiments.

Indicative Module Content

This practical based module is subdivided into a number of different types of activity: consolidation of basic laboratory skills, development of advanced laboratory skills via a series of core experiments and dry laboratory exercises. Within each type of activity the exercises are designed to develop practical, analytical, synthetic and problem solving skills. The development of communication skills and attitudes appropriate to an experimental scientist is an important element of the course.

Mode of Delivery

The course is laboratory based. Students work in pairs and each pair has a specific programme of experiments to follow. The course is timetabled as one day per week throughout the semester.

Students performance is continuously assessed through a number of instruments. Instruments of assessment include laboratory diary inspection, formal written report and evaluation of quality, accuracy and professional conduct.
