Aims of Module
To provide students with the ability to demonstrate skills in information technology (IT), oral and written communications, information retrieval and study skills and health and safety.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Indicative Module Content
Information technology; network login, administration of personal file system, management of e-mail, using the Windows interface to the network operating system, word-processing, spreadsheet, databases, graphic presentation, web browsing tools, presentation package, use of CD-ROM. Written communication skills; academic writing, principles and practice of report writing, essay writing, abstracting, referencing, making conclusions and recommendations. Oral communication skills; principles and practice of presentation skills, use of visual aids, answering and asking questions. Study skills; identification of primary sources of information, accessing library resources, electronic databases, citing reference sources, styles of note taking, goal setting, time management for general study and assessments, preparation for assessment, examination technique.

Mode of Delivery
IT will be delivered as a series of student centred laboratory sessions using selected parts of the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) syllabus, where students will develop competence in practical skills and explore a range of programs. Communication and study skills will be delivered with lectures supported by tutorial and student centred sessions where students will practice and apply skills. There will be lecture/tutorials on professional standards and careers in nutrition and dietetics.
