Aims of Module
To provide students with a knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts of Chemistry and Cell Biology.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Understand the basic concepts and principles of atomic structure, bonding and chemical equations.

Describe the basic structures, functions and growth characteristics of cells.

Indicative Module Content
Atomic theory, stable and radioisotopes, Electronic structure of atoms and relation to periodic table, Atomic orbitals, theories of bonding and physical and chemical properties, chemical formulae, equations and types of reaction. The mole concept. Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cell Structure: Cell wall and membrane structure and transport, nuclear structure, ribosome structure, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi Body, Iysosomes, mitochondria, chloroplasts. Mitosis, meiosis, embryonic development, carcinogenesis.
