Aims of Module
To provide the student with an understanding of Urban and Rural, Theory and Practice to underpin the development of their individual design thesis at part 2.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Analyse and evaluate the range of established and contemporary Urban and Rural design Theories.
2 Critically appraise the practical application of Urban and Rural design Theory.
3 Assess the performance of urban and rural theory as applied in contemporary case study developments.
4 Undertake independent learning via Personal Professional Development in the area, to learn skills and knowledge in theory and practice enabling students to gain self-awareness as a developing learner and to plan actions that will enhance personal and career development.

Indicative Module Content
The module allows students the opportunity to study advanced Urban and Rural design in support of their individual design thesis. It will introduce students to study and test established and contemporary applications of key concepts and theories.

Module Delivery
This module is delivered by a blended learning approach focusing on directed student research, online activities, lectures and practical workshops. Lectures on various aspects of the development, sustainability and planning of rural and city proximities introduce the broader picture. These are supplemented by tutorials and seminars intended to develop a deeper understanding and self-directed learning.

ASSESSMENT PLAN

Component 1
Type: Coursework Weighting: 40% Outcomes Assessed: 3, 4
Description: Assessment will be by written and verbal assessment in the student's engagement with the case study/s demonstrating understanding and application of advanced theories of the urban and rural design.
Component 2
Type: Coursework Weighting: 60% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 2
Description: Assessment focuses on principles and application of appropriate strands of theories of urban and rural acquired in the module. Submission of an A4 essay (3,000 words maximum) on the detailed analysis of chosen urban/rural case study.

MODULE PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTOR
Explanatory Text
The overall module grade is based on 40% weighting of Component 1 (Coursework X axis) and 60% weighting of Component 2 (Coursework Y axis). An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module. Non-submission of either component will result in an NS grade.
