Aims of Module
To enable students to develop advanced design skills in relation to specific themed areas.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Conduct group/individual research, analysis and synthesis.
2 Exploit the contemporary culture of design philosophy to articulate and apply a clearly defined concept.
3 Demonstrate awareness of legislative frameworks.
4 Communicate design intentions effectively by oral presentation and multi-media techniques.
5 Undertake independent learning via Personal Professional Development in the area, to learn skills and knowledge in theory and practice enabling students to gain self-awareness as a developing learner and to plan actions that will enhance personal and career development.

Indicative Module Content
The project themes are drawn from relevant contemporary architectural issues with an element of complexity that allow students to develop well considered and detailed architectural solutions. Students will demonstrate individual learning and group work through journals, reports and all design related material.

Module Delivery
This is a studio-based module with introductory lectures, individual and group tutorials, private study and design work. Students develop work through self-directed learning, and through tutor consultation. Students will be expected to consult regularly with tutors and present their work to staff, other students and invited critics at periodic reviews. Final designs will be presented orally and using multi-media techniques in open forum. Tutors provide feedback at tutorials and reviews.

Component 1
Type: Coursework Weighting: 100% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Description: The coursework consists of a Portfolio of design work - the portfolio includes drawing and models generated from all tasks related to studio unit research work, activities, lectures, tutorials and independent study. It should include a research journal with graphic and written presentation distilling the material, analysis and shared design work developed through the unit (group work). The journal should also include an individual interpretation of the collective finding of the group. The journal should record the process by which the unit work was developed. The group work will be assessed by staff and through peer review. Digital CD submission - this should include all the images presented in the above pieces of work in PDF format. This is a mandatory element of your submission.

The overall module grade is based on 100% weighting of Component 1 (portfolio). An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module. Non-submission will result in an NS grade.
