Aims of Module
To enable the student to develop and apply advanced design skills, strategies and techniques within the context of a defined thematic area, and to formulate an approach for their developing thesis.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Apply advanced design skills incorporating use of appropriate strategies and techniques, through a range of advanced architectural design projects.
2 Critically evaluate and apply appropriate contemporary theories and ideas relating to urban and rural design.
3 Research, interpret, and appropriately apply in architectural design projects sustainable principles and key legislation relating to the safety and well-being of users.
4 Communicate design intentions effectively by verbal and visual presentation methods, including advanced multi-media techniques at a professional level.
5 Demonstrate a significant level of independent learning developed via documented reflective practice, as well as ability to plan own learning actions and priorities in the subject area.

Indicative Module Content
Students work within a themed unit to explore contemporary architectural and urban issues within the context of a specific place and agenda, while developing advanced design skills, strategies and techniques. These generally include working and learning collaboratively, developing knowledge and understanding of appropriate theories typologies and technical solutions and developing professional position and skills at a Part 2 level.

Module Delivery
This is a studio-based module with introductory lectures, individual and group tutorials, private study and group/individual design work. Students develop work through self-directed learning, and tutor consultation. Students will be expected to consult regularly with tutors and present their work to staff, other students and invited critics at periodic reviews. Final designs will be presented orally and using multi-media techniques in open forum. Tutors provide feedback at tutorials and reviews. Students will keep a reflective log of their developing educational and professional journey.

Description: The coursework consists of a Portfolio of design work - the portfolio includes drawings, models and all work generated from all tasks related to studio unit: research group and individual work, activities, lectures, tutorials, professional development and independent study. It should include a research logbook recording your educational journey in a concise graphic and written presentation.
