Aims of Module
To provide the student with professional skills to undertake sustainable architectural design and communication in an urban context.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1	Undertake research, development and design studies individually and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
2	Analyse a site and context, develop a brief for a moderately complex civic or cultural building, and produce an appropriate contextual response
3	Create architectural designs which show consideration of spatial, compositional and tectonic qualities and consideration of cultural and professional issues including cost and legislation.
4	Apply and integrate appropriate tectonic strategies for structure, construction and environmental design with specific consideration of approaches towards zero carbon and fire safety
5	Communicate design intentions verbally and in 2D and 3D to a professional standard using multi-media techniques.

Indicative Module Content
Students deal with the design of a moderately complex civic building demonstrating understanding of integrated design in an urban context: urban design, planning and professional issues. The development of the project brief, by each student, includes an analysis and interpretation of the client user requirements and the exploration of the possibility to add value to it. - The role of the architect in balancing important parameters to achieve sustainable results and focus in particular on: - Context and the need of buildings -and spaces between them- to respond to the conditions of the site in providing environments of appropriate scale, aspiration and durability relative to human needs - Comfort and environmental performance is to be explored relative to the building user and prescribed function of the building. Both passive and active design measures are to be explored including making strategic decisions as well as their integration into the design project - Structure and construction are to be developed in line with the sustainable agenda. This involves the appraisal of various structural and constructional methods as well as material choices relative to their design strategy, environmental impact and relative costs. All these choices are to be taken relative to the UK regulatory framework. - The role of the architect in society is examined and the duties and responsibilities to clients, users and other building professionals as well as wider societal responsibilities and the ongoing impact of design on communities.

Work is developed through student-centred learning, and through tutor consultation. Students will be expected to present their work to staff and other students at periodic reviews and consult regularly with tutors. Tutors provide feedback in across the board tutorials and at reviews. During the interdisciplinary project students work in small groups and make team presentations.

Component 1

Description:	Presentation generated from all tasks related to studio projects, activities, lectures, tutorials and independent study, worth 100% of Module Grade. The submission consist of: 1) A display and verbal presentation of all project drawings, relevant models (physical and digital) and a Reflective journal (sketchbook/report). The latter should be a written and graphic presentation of the 'design journey' that communicates the learning and process that took place throughout the semester as well as a critical reflection of decision taken. 2) A digital online submission: a professional digital portfolio. This should include all the images presented in the above pieces of work in PDF format.
