To provide the student with an understanding of Modern and Contemporary architectural thinking and production, and its relevance to contemporary practice. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Identify and describe a range of key ideas, periods, sites, buildings and designs in Modern Architecture and Landscape design from the 19th and (mainly) the 20th Century, and evaluate their significance in relation to the evolution of Modernity and related movements. |
2 | Evaluate the significance of a range of key ideas, periods, sites, buildings and designs in Modern Architecture and Landscape design from the 19th and (mainly) the 20th Century in relation to the evolution of Modernity and related movements. |
3 | Discuss and evaluate architectural ideas through a structured piece of writing that appropriately applies the conventions of academic writing. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
The module presents a historical survey of the main features of the various stages of development of the Modern Movement, linking these to relevant passages in the history of art and sculpture, and to a number of influential theories, which emerged at various times along its course. At the same it allows the student to make particular study of chosen aspects involved in this development, or of contemporary work in relation to Modernity as a whole or one of its aspects. |

Lectures in the architectural history, theory & social context of Modernism introduce the broader picture. These are supplemented by tutorials, seminars and other forms of blended learning including online activities intended to develop deeper understanding and self directed learning. |
