Aims of Module
To develop further understanding of the nature of architecture, to consolidate the process of architectural design using a creative, integrated and critical approach. To develop basic skills in the design of buildings in an urban context, and to address environmental and sustainability issues.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1	Select appropriate architectural precedent and analyse using basic principles of research and investigation to understand culture and context.
2	Analyse and understand the characteristics of a site or building in an urban setting and produce an appropriate contextual response
3	Create architectural designs which show consideration of spatial, compositional, and tectonic qualities.
4	Apply basic principles of structure, construction, environmental and sustainable design, with due consideration of relevant safety issues.
5	Communicate design intentions verbally and in 2D and 3D using multi-media techniques and BIM.

Indicative Module Content
Students undertake a series of studio based projects varying in scale and focus, consolidating the learning from previous projects, to allow investigation of perceptual, compositional and technological criteria in relation to architectural design. Projects will explore the integration of a new building into an existing defined urban setting, environmental and sustainability issues and place making. Students will continue to develop their skills in professional generation and composition of presentation material, and curation and methodical archiving of design process work. Each project programme has a clear format to define the task, aims, objectives, learning outcomes, introduction to relevant philosophy and technology together with details of presentation, assessment and feedback, timetable and bibliography. Students develop skills in 2D CAD and 3D visualisations to aid their design and communication skills.

Students develop work through self-directed learning, and through tutor consultation. Students will be expected to consult regularly with tutors and present their work to staff, other students and invited critics at periodic reviews. Final designs will be presented orally and using multi-media techniques in open forum. Tutors provide feedback at tutorials and reviews.
