Aims of Module
To develop understanding of the nature of architecture, to consolidate the process of architectural design using imagination related to philosophical, technological and programmatic design considerations. To develop basic skills in landscape design and site layout. To develop techniques in graphic communication and presentation, including the use of CAD for design and presentation.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Investigate an architectural subject or building type by fieldwork or bibliographic research of publications, audio-visual and electronic sources.
2 Analyse a site and interpret a brief to generate an imaginative and integrated design of a building of relatively simple programmatic nature, within a landscape setting demonstrating an appreciation of architectural composition and aesthetic.
3 Appreciate and understand issues relating to culture and context through appropriate research and analysis of precedent and apply this understanding and critical awareness in own designs.
4 Apply and integrate the basic principles of structure, construction, environment and sustainable design; also demonstrate awareness of Health and safety issues.
5 Communicate clearly the contextual, experiential qualities and intentions of architectural design orally and using multi-media techniques and physical models, including basic understanding of BIM.

Indicative Module Content
Students undertake a series of studio based linked projects that explore material and contextual conditions to set the framework for a design project (or projects). The subject matter and projects set will explore landscape as an integrated part of an architectural design. Students will engage in critical precedent studies to support their preliminary investigations which may range in focus from technology of construction to the evolution and contemporary condition of landscape design. Preliminary investigations will be done in groups. Investigations will be tailored appropriately to the semester’s design project(s). In addition to design projects students will keep a visual notebook that is designed to sharpen their ability to read architectural drawings and extract important generators of the design. There will be an emphasis on composition of presentation material and curation and methodical archiving of design process work. Each project programme has a clear format to define the task, aims, objectives, learning outcomes, introduction to relevant philosophy and technology together with details of presentation, assessment and feedback, timetable and bibliography.

Module Delivery
This is a studio-based module with introductory lectures, individual and group tutorials, private study and design work. Students develop work through self-directed learning, and through tutor consultation. Students will be expected to consult regularly with tutors and present their work to staff, other students and invited critics at periodic reviews. Final designs will be presented orally and using multi-media techniques in open forum. Tutors provide feedback at tutorials and reviews.

The overall module grade is based on 100% weighting of Component 1 (portfolio). An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module. Non-submission will result in an NS grade.
