On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Demonstrate awareness of the historical figure of the architect, and their contemporary role in society. |
2 | Demonstrate awareness of architecture as an integrative activity, and the relationship of the architect to allied disciplines and the construction industry. |
3 | Demonstrate awareness of the statutory, regulatory, professional, and ethical responsibilities of the architect. |
4 | Demonstrate an understanding of the energy, carbon, and resource implications for creating sustainable architecture in the context of climate change. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
The module provides the student with an initial understanding of important architectural ideas, such as the constant human requirement for shelter and the development of architectural building types throughout human history. It presents an overview of the architectural profession as an integrative and collaborative endeavour, and locates the discipline within a broader framework of professional, technical, cultural, regulatory, and ethical production with particular reference to sustainability and climate change. |
Module Delivery |

Lectures covering a range of subjects, including the structure of the profession and relationship with other allied professions, the regulatory framework, the historical figure of the architect, the process of building design, the implications of climate change on the profession (including the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge), and industry, etc. These are supplemented by tutorials and seminars to reinforce learning through discussion. |
