Aims of Module
To provide the student with an understanding of the different and changing patterns of architectural form throughout history, with particular emphasis on the effects of social structures, climate and materials and the results of the "Modern" revolution on structure and form.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Identify and describe a range of key historical cultures from around the world in terms of their architectural output.
2 Identify and describe a range of key buildings from around the world, including vernacular and modern examples, and evaluate their salient aspects and significance in relation to their immediate cultural and material context.
3 Demonstrate and apply a basic graphical and written methods of architectural description and analysis to representative buildings from different cultural contexts.

Indicative Module Content
The module provides the student with an understanding of important architectural ideas - such as the constant human requirement for shelter and the development of architectural building types throughout human history. It presents an overview of the architectural output of various key historical cultures around the world, and locates the discipline of architecture within a broader framework of cultural production with references to craft and the Fine Arts. The module introduces techniques of architectural analysis in relation to historical and modern buildings.

Module Delivery
Lectures in the architectural history, theory & social issues related to building design. These are supplemented by tutorials and seminars intended to develop deeper understanding and self-directed learning and other forms of blended learning including online activities.

Component 1
Type: Coursework Weighting: 50% Outcomes Assessed: 1, 2
Description: Time-limited, supervised, individual course work assesses the student's understanding of the general theoretical principles explored in the lecture course, including recognition key concepts and buildings.
Component 2
Type: Coursework Weighting: 50% Outcomes Assessed: 3
Description: Individual coursework includes the individual journal, and an analitycal essay through which the student is to explore a given question related to the main theoretical aspects of the course.

MODULE PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTOR
Explanatory Text
The overall module grade is based on 50% weighting of Component 1 (coursework Y axis) and 50% weighting of Component 2 (coursework X axis). An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module. Non-submission of either component will result in an NS grade.
