Aims of Module
To develop and extend students' visual practice, content, ideas, forms and technique, leading to advanced specialist skills and practices necessary, in extending beyond established applied practice domains. To demonstrate advanced levels of independent visual research and theoretical inquiry in support of a body of work that, synthesises thinking, and demonstrates independence of thought within specialist applied practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate ability to independently apply strategy[s] to select, critically evaluate and synthesise relevant practice-based approaches in the development of project work, and its continued professional development.
2 Demonstrate focused understanding of relevant subject specific knowledge of practitioners and theory at advanced level[s], including where appropriate sustainable practices and concepts within contemporary or emerging fields.
3 Demonstrate independence in the development of creative practice[s] within specialist area, communicating selection, critical judgment, and effectively planning and evaluation against a personal project plan.
4 Evidence range of research skills and methods in support of academic enquiry, including information technology and visual research, in constructing a critical framework for their practice-based understanding of contemporary practice[s].

Indicative Module Content
Building on established visual practices within given specialism of Art and Design, this module will support students in re-evaluating, experimenting and testing new ideas. The module specifically encourages students to explore in greater depth, their specialist area of visual practice, leading to establishing greater independence, and professional levels of critical reflection when applied to personal creative project[s]. Students will be supported in achieving this by a range of teaching methods and specialist academic studio staff. All students are encouraged to expand their visual practice and methodology through self-directed investigation, experimentation across a variety of creative processes and technical skills, including sustainable principles and practices where appropriate. This module offers access to specialist teaching knowledge, professional mentoring, workshop provision and technical support in the development of a negotiated body of applied visual practice[s], collaborative or external project based work.

Module Delivery
The module will focus on individualized but negotiated models of study and self-directed critically reflective practice, with the majority of time allocated to self-directed project work, supported by a studio-based tutorial environment or equivalent. Staff and students identify most appropriate practice-based strategies in the development of their project work by means of written project-proposal. This module is delivered and facilitated by means of studio-based crits, specialist tutors and tutorial critique's (group or individual), in addition access to specialist workshop provision and external creative cultural partnerships, where appropriate. Students are supported through individual and group tutorials, peer-to-peer critiques and specialist workshops and technical staff.

Description: A substantive portfolio of developed work comprising prototypes, maquette's, art or design works, annotated sketchbooks, digital content, written self-reflections and 'in-progress' exposition.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Students are also required to identify (and will be guided towards), a range of texts and contextual materials relevant to their specialist creative practice and area of research. These will typically include textbooks, journals and on-line resources written by critics, curators, academics, historians, philosophers, theorists, artists and designers.
