Reference AA4311 Version 1
Created March 2023 SCQF Level SCQF 10
Approved June 2014 SCQF Points 30
Amended August 2017 ECTS Points 15

Aims of Module
To support the student in demonstrating their critical and contextual independence by undertaking a substantial body of self-directed research, analysis, planning, synthesis, and communication of ideas and concepts. This will enable the student to position their creative practice effectively and informed through critical research methods, leading to an academic body of critical and theoretical written work.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Develop a self-directed research project including the integration of appropriate research methods and relevant critical theory.
2 Critique selected historical and contemporary course/discipline-specific themes to synthesise and contextualise the project aims and objectives gathered through research.
3 Test critical and analytical thinking through a rigorous enquiry and conceptual exploration of ideas related to the context and research of practice.
4 Communicate a comprehensive understanding of theoretical context/s and critical decision-making process in constructing and substantiating a reasoned argument.
5 Compose a resolved body of theoretically informed written work, that clearly evidences autonomy, academic referencing, participation, and commitment to sustained independent enquiry practice.

Indicative Module Content
The module supports the development of a self-directed research enquiry of the students' own choosing, and in negotiation with their supervisor, which relates to their studio work. Supported by a series of seminars, peer to peer dialogue, academic supervision, and tutorials, where students are responsible for the planning development and management of their theoretical enquiry and critical argument. Students are required to evaluate their research findings, through preparation of a clear argument, in-depth analysis, reflection, and resolution, leading to a body of critical and theoretical work. Completed written work should evidence understanding and consideration of ethical and sustainable themes in a manner appropriate to the context of the topic of enquiry. The development of coursework within this ‘Critical and Contextual Studies’ module is reciprocally informed by both Independent ‘Studio Practice’ and ‘Creative Futures’ modules.

Module Delivery
This module consists primarily of self-directed research and writing, with time allocated for group seminars, individual tutorials and further reading. Visits from professionals in the field, and national and international study visits, may form part of the curriculum.
