Reference AA3704 Version 4
Created March 2023 SCQF Level SCQF 9
Approved August 2012 SCQF Points 30
Amended July 2023 ECTS Points 15

Aims of Module
To become increasingly aware of Painting's 'position' in the wider context of Contemporary Fine Art agendas. To investigate and research motives, issues, aesthetics and forms within a context of Painting and Drawing. To question orthodoxies and conventions about Painting and Drawing by exploring a broad range of creative strategies towards the discipline. To develop student's practice through experimentation and attempt to resolve ideas with alternative, innovative and/ or appropriate solutions.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Select with increasing independence and apply appropriate methodologies of research in order to identify, develop and resolve ideas clearly.
2 Produce work that is increasingly self-directed and demonstrates a conceptual and imaginative use of materials, processes and technologies.
3 Use critical and analytical skills with increasing confidence with regard to key concepts, features and discourses of Fine Art.
4 Be able to utilise aspects of professional practice, including IT, in relation to their specialist discipline.
5 Understand the contextual and critical framework appropriate to the specialist study of Painting within Fine Art, and communicate this understanding textually, orally and visually.

Indicative Module Content
The module provides an initial period of intensive and wide-ranging research in which the student is expected to extend their knowledge and understanding of current practice in Painting and Drawing within a Fine Art context. The development of the student's conceptual thinking, which utilises less obvious or literal means of expression than had been the case previously. The study of ideas, philosophies and issues pertaining to the individual student’s chosen areas of exploration. The supervised Drawing programme in level 3 introduces the student to a range of strategies within Drawing and fosters a symbiotic relationship between drawing and studio practice. Further development of a personal vision within the context of Painting and Drawing. Consideration should be given at this stage as to whether the work requires a specific context in which it must be viewed. Completed project work should evidence an awareness and consideration of sustainable themes in a manner appropriate to the context of the discipline.

Module Delivery
Each student is allocated a studio space and assigned an academic tutor for the session. Timetabled tutorials will take place regularly throughout the semester. All relevant course material is hosted on the relevant module page of CampusMoodle. Although the emphasis in Stage 3 is on the individual there are still regular points in the timetable where group and peer learning experiences take place. These include thematic power point presentations/ lectures, group crits and discussion groups. The teaching staff are, at this point, responsive to each student's specialised requirements. Throughout Semester 1 the students continue to follow a structured drawing programme that the students increasingly tailor to meet their own individual interests or needs. Organised gallery, museum visits may take place during the course of the module. Where appropriate, students may also undertake placements. An overseas study tour, New York and Venice in recent years, provides students with direct experience of significant works of art and fosters an awareness of the wider context within which the students are working.
