Reference AA3402 Version 1
Created August 2023 SCQF Level SCQF 9
Approved September 2023 SCQF Points 15
Amended ECTS Points 7.5

Aims of Module
To demonstrate knowledge and skills in experimenting with a range of core research theories, methods and skills to formulate a research proposal for Stage 4.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Experiment with a range of appropriate research methods through self-directed research enquiry.
2 Interpret a selection of critical themes, theories and concepts within contemporary practice and in relation to evolving studio practice.
3 Identify a focused research theme relevant to contemporary practice.
4 Assemble self-directed research materials and communicate the focus of study through a research-based portfolio of work.
5 Demonstrate critical skills through attendance, participation and engagement of lectures and seminars.

Indicative Module Content
This module will enable students to develop and give focus to their critical and contextual enquiry and gain experience of in-depth experimentation with a range of core research theories, methods and skills. By consolidating skills in writing and in relation to an emerging studio practice the student will engage in several guided research and writing activities. Through increasingly self-directed study, discussion, and research, emphasis is placed on the personal development and integrated studio practice enabling identification of a research focus, testing of research methods, and production of a portfolio and a research proposal for honours year. Completed theoretical project work should evidence an awareness and consideration of sustainable themes in a manner appropriate to the context of the discipline. The CCS programme is a critical counterpoint to work in the studio and is intended to create a conversation between practice and theory.

Module Delivery
Critical and Contextual Studies is interdisciplinary. The module is lecture and seminar based, with allocated time for self-directed study and further reading. This will enable the student to explore and identify their own critical and creative research methods to connect to their studio practice. Visits from relevant professionals and study trips, may form part of the curriculum.
