Aims of Module
To demonstrate expanding knowledge and skills in interpreting appropriate themes in contemporary art and design contexts through oral and written work.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Draw on a range of contextual themes, theories and concepts in relation to evolving critical and studio practice.
2 Differentiate from a range of topics, themes and theories through reading lists and personally sourced materials related to contemporary themes in creative ecologies and evolving studio practice.
3 Make judgements on a range of critical themes in the development of writing and oral practice producing a portfolio of work based on the lecture and seminar programme.
4 Demonstrate critical and contextual knowledge through attendance, participation and engagement of lectures and seminars.

Indicative Module Content
The module will enable the student to differentiate critical issues in art and design. By drawing on contemporary art and design themes around The Social and Political, and Ecology and Sustainability. Emphasis is placed on demonstrating an increasing self-directed research and independence in written and oral work. Study will include reviewing a range of resources - including library collections, online image databases, and physical and archival materials. Theoretical project work should evidence the assessment of sustainable themes in a manner appropriate to the context of the discipline. The CCS programme is a critical counterpoint to work in the studio and is intended to create a conversation between practice and theory.

Module Delivery
Critical and Contextual Studies is interdisciplinary. The module is lecture and seminar based, with allocated time for self-directed study and further reading. Group discussion and critical experimentation will be facilitated through seminar and workshops. Visits from relevant professionals and study trips, may form part of the curriculum.
