MODULE DESCRIPTOR
Module Title
Anatomy and Kinesiology
Reference HS1112 Version 2
Created March 2017 SCQF Level SCQF 7
Approved September 2015 SCQF Points 15
Amended August 2017 ECTS Points 7.5

Aims of Module
To provide students with the key anatomical knowledge of the musculoskeletal system necessary to conduct analysis of human movement.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Identify the surface markings of the human skeleton and relate to underlying anatomy.
2 Describe and classify the joints of the human body and relate structure to function.
3 Identify the location and describe the action of the major muscles of the human body.
4 Analyse, at a basic level, the joint movements and muscle action of simple activities.

Indicative Module Content
Bones of the axial and appendicular skeleton; body planes; directional terms and movements; anatomical landmarks; categories (fibrous, cartilaginous, synovial) and classifications (ball and socket, hinge, ellipsoid/condylar, saddle) of joints and the relationship between the structure and function of each; major muscles of the human body (their names, locations, orientations, origins, insertions and actions); basic movement analysis including joint movements, types of muscle contraction (concentric, eccentric and isometric) and muscles involved.

Module Delivery
Online resources supported with face to face tutorials and practical sessions.
