Aims of Module
To provide the student with a broad understanding of the UK political system and its social basis.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Describe the main features of the UK political system and its social basis.
2 Outline the structure and role of the basic institutions of UK central, devolved and local government.
3 Outline contemporary political issues.

Indicative Module Content
The roles, structure and powers of the UK government, including the Prime Minister and the cabinet; The roles, composition and structures of the House of Commons and the House of Lords; Devolved government, especially the composition and powers of the Scottish parliament and the Scottish government; The roles, structures and powers of local government in Scotland; The key instituions in the European Union; Electoral systems used in the UK governmental system; Political participation in the UK.

Module Delivery
This is a lecture based module supplemented with seminars. Lectures provide core course content, supported by seminars.
