Position: Professor in Microbiology, Research Co-ordinator

Academic Background

Linda studied Microbiology at Heriot-Watt University and was awarded a PhD from the University of Dundee for her work on cyanobacteria. Her main area of expertise is in aquatic microbiology focussing on cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and the many problems they cause.

She leads the Cyanotoxin Research Group which carries out internationally renowned research into the environmental impact and monitoring of cyanobacterial toxins.

Research Interests

Analytical and bioassay detection of cyanotoxins; water quality monitoring and innovative treatment methods; chemical ecology; novel bioactives.

Professor Lawton`s research group investigates bioactive compounds produced by cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). The focus of these studies are cyanotoxins that are now recognised as a threat to human health through their occurrence in drinking water supplies and recreational waters. However, there is also increasing interest in other bioactive compounds which may be utilised as novel pharmaceuticals or agrochemical. Particular areas of research are: Detection of cyanotoxins, Purification of cyanotoxins
