We have a reputation for the delivery of courses with a strong bias toward relevant practical experience, which are taught to the highest level. The School utilises relevant areas within the Hospitals of the north of Scotland (as well as further afield) to ensure the student acquires both appropriate and extensive clinical experiences.

Sport and exercise science students gain relevant practical experience within RGU's own sports centre as well as placements outwith RGU.

Learning environment

Currently, there are approximately five hundred and fifty undergraduate, postgraduate and post qualification students in the School. The majority are from Scotland, but with significant numbers from other EU countries. The School welcomes international (both EU and non-EU) and mature students, with each year witnessing a growing intake of both. Such a combination creates a stimulating learning environment within a supportive teaching framework.

Undergraduate courses are taught on a modular basis, with several modules common to all programmes, encouraging interaction between the disciplines from the outset. Similarly, at later stages in the undergraduate course, modules are shared with students from nursing and social work courses. This multi-disciplinary practice allows students valuable insights into other professions and is particularly relevant in today’s holistic and integrated team approach to patient care. Graduates therefore enter the workplace well equipped to embark upon their chosen professions. They are in great demand, most having secured employment by graduation day and in most years 100% are employed within three months of graduating.

The School has a first-rate teaching provision from a core group of lecturers who were formerly practitioners. Each contributes a wealth of professional and clinical experience which ensures the continued success of the degree programme and quality of teaching. The collective range of experience guarantees a wide scope of subjects in the curriculum which relate to current practice. Strong links with practitioners and managers, helps to ensure that the students training relates to changing practice within their chosen profession.

With a balance of academic, practical/work-based learning opportunities, there is an emphasis on students becoming self-directed learners. The aim of the courses is to develop highly qualified graduates, who are flexible enough to adopt a variety of roles within the public, private and voluntary sectors.
