MSc Obesity Science and Management

In September 2009 Robert Gordon University introduced an MSc degree in Obesity Science and Management.

Mode of study includes full time or part time blended learning (e.g., 3 days face-to-face per module with a strong element of distance learning). The course may be completed full time in one year or part time over two years. Stand-alone modules may be competed for those interested in a specific topic.

The first semester contains the following four modules:
- Aetiology of Obesity
- Epidemiology and Public Health
- Physiology & Molecular Mechanisms of Obesity Associated Diseases
- Assessment of Obesity and Body Composition

The second semester contains the following modules:
- Research Methods and Data Analysis
- Management of Obesity in Primary Care
- Weight Management
- Childhood Obesity Management

PG Certificate and PG Diploma will be awarded after completion of first and second semesters respectively.

Completion of a research project will lead to the award of MSc in Obesity Science and Management.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold an appropriate honours degree or equivalent professional qualification and be able to demonstrate suitable background knowledge.

About the Course

This course has been designed to prepare graduates and professionals working in Nutrition, Healthcare and Public Health/Care to address and tackle the obesity problem. The course aims to promote a multidisciplinary approach to the management of obesity and to develop a critical understanding of concepts and controversies in obesity management through a scientific and clinical approach.

Students will learn about various aspects of obesity such as:
- Societal influences, socio-economic inequalities, public health issues;
- Molecular, biochemical and physiological basis of metabolism and the relationships to obesity;
- Skills required to assess obese individuals' needs;
- How to develop and provide workable solutions.

A key element of the course is a research project that will provide students with experience in conducting research, data analysis, report-writing and disseminating findings.
