This session presents an overview of electronic theses and dissertations from many perspectives and provides you with the key facts you need to get the most out of the conference. Armed with a team of experts, the "Rookies" session will introduce you to concepts such as the myriad of free resources available through the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD). Specific topics will include:

Join the NDLTD-MetaArchive initiative to cooperatively harvest ETDs via a Distributed Digital Preservation (DDP) network. By participating in this half-day workshop you will gain the information necessary to fully understand how this preservation system works and your options for participating. If you haven't already, please complete the ETD preservation survey at http://lumiere.lib.vt.edu/surveys/

The NDLTD DDP network is part of the MetaArchive Cooperative's preservation archives http://www.metaarchive.org/ which employ the open-source LOCKSS software http://www.lockss.org/ to harvest, cache, and validate files in a geographically distributed network. The MetaArchive Cooperative is an independent, international membership association comprised of institutions that seek an active role in the preservation of their digital collections. Don't let your institution be one of the 75% of the survey respondents who reported that their institution does not have a formal preservation strategy.
