Research Themes and Groups within the School of Engineering

Research in the School of Engineering is focused on three of the themes which the University has identified as its main areas of interest:

Health and Welfare
Energy and the Environment
The Knowledge Economy

To support these themes, the university has three Research Institutes which coordinate work at a higher level. Many of our staff are also members of these (and in particular the IDEAS institute which deals with many areas of Engineering and Computing and the Institute for Health and Welfare).

You can gain access to the institute web pages by following the link below:

The School has four groups which reflect these wider themes. These are listed in the sections below.

The Materials and Bioengineering Group

The Materials and Bioengineering Group reflects the Health and Welfare theme. Particularly specialising in adsorption, porosity, surface science and biomaterials. The group consists of the Advanced Materials and Biomaterials Research Centre:

The Energy Group

The Energy Group focuses on Energy and the Environment. It works on issues related to the oil industry, hydrogen production and more fundamental aspects, such as membrane technology, fluid mechanics and condition monitoring. The centres and subgroups comprising the Energy Group are shown below:

The Enviromental Technology Group

The Enviromental Technology Group also works in the Energy and the Environment theme. It delivers expertise in renewable energy, integration of renewable energy-based power plants into electrical systems, advanced water and air treatment technology, environmental sensing and environmental catalysis. The centres and subgroups comprising the Environmental Technology Group are shown below:

The Electronic Systems group

Finally the Electronic Systems group concentrates on research in the area of the Knowledge Economy; for example, in image processing and artificial intelligence. The centres and subgroups comprising the Electronic Systems Group are shown below:
