Welcome to the School of Computing
Welcome to The Robert Gordon University, and the School of Computing. The School specialises in a range of Computing and IT technologies. Our career-ready graduates benefit from degree programmes designed in partnership with industry and the professional bodies, by staff whose expertise is at the leading edge of these technologies. Our Computing laboratories are some of the best equipped of any University department and offer access to the latest software technologies.
The School has been recognised as the best computer science department of any new UK University in the Good University Guide 2009.
RGU is well placed at the centre of an area recognised for its software development opportunities; 30% of Scotland's software engineers live and work here. Our excellent links with industry offer exciting careers, interesting industrial placements for all undergraduates and projects that are relevant in the real world. The area includes mainstream software houses, IT providers in major oil-related companies, specialist software consultancies, and important venture capital start-ups.
Our undergraduate Computing courses develop skills and expertise for a wide range of Computing technologies and target applications. A range of Computing courses with specialised themes focus on the latest technologies for Graphics and Animation, Mobile Applications, Artificial Intelligence, Multimedia and the Internet, or on applications in business and e-Commerce or systems to support the Information Age. A traditional Computer Science course suits the technically-oriented. A degree-link course in Information Systems tops up a variety of FE courses.
A range of postgraduate Masters courses suit Computing graduates or graduates wishing to explore computing as a new career. A flexible on-line Masters including CPD provision allows professionals to study part-time. Research degrees offer an opening in our research strengths. Many of our postgraduates are international students.
Our research areas include Information Retrieval and Interaction, Knowledge Based Systems, Computational Intelligence, Graphics and Imaging, and Mathematics for Computing and Engineering.
Much of our research is encompassed by SmartWeb, a centre of excellence on intelligent computing technologies and their application to new types of Web-based systems and services. A new £1M purpose-designed Computing Technologies Research Centre provides a superb environment for our innovative research.
