Overview of the International Tourism Management Course

The International Tourism Management degree has been designed to equip you with the skills required for a career in the tourism and leisure profession. The course provides a firm foundation in business basics e.g. Marketing, Human Resources and Professional Skills and also build your knowledge of the industry through specialist subjects such as Heritage Management and Sustainable Tourism Management along with the current thinking on Emerging Tourism Markets and Destinations.

     Tourism Management Institute

The International Tourism Management course is accredited by Institute of Hospitality and recognised by the Tourism Management Institute and is a highly vocational full time honours degree course. Studying on it will develop your competence and understanding of the tourism industry and help you gain transferable skills which are essential for any professional in the field today. Relevance to contemporary practice is ensured and you will study a range of topics such as:

    Placements and Exchange Opportunities

If you choose the one year paid Work Placement opportunity you will get vocational training AND gain insights into the interdisciplinary nature of the industry. Placements can be local, national, or international. Students have worked in places such as Edinburgh Castle, with Visit Scotland and in Summer Holiday Camps in both Europe and the USA.

There is also the chance to study at one of our partner universities in Europe, through the Erasmus programme.

Students who have been abroad speak with real enthusiasm and appreciation of this opportunity. Suzanne Reid, a student of International Tourism Management speaks of her experience in Cyprus:

    Prizes

Many companies submit Business prizes for our students. These awards are a demonstration of the high regard which employers and the private sector have for our courses and calibre of our graduates.

    Career Opportunities

When you finish the course, you will be eligible for Student Membership of the Institute of Hospitality (formerly Hotel and Catering International Management Association). Tourism and hospitality are closely linked and this course provides the knowledge and skills required for a range of careers in these sectors.

Our graduates go on to work in tourism, travel and leisure or into management positions within the hospitality industry where their general business and specialised training prove to be invaluable. Some go on to launch their own successful businesses using the management and entrepreneurial skills gained during the course.

Kevin Watt was looking for a career change and graduated with a BA in Tourism and Hospitality Management some years ago and has since gone on to build his own business. He says that, "As a mature student I chose Robert Gordon University as I knew it could offer me the practical learning that suited me at that stage in my life.....and taught me many different skills. Studying developed my professional attitude and encouraged me to take responsibility for my own output."

Melanie Kissock graduated with a degree in tourism and gained a place on the Sheraton Hotel graduate management scheme. She says that "securing the place on the graduate scheme enabled me to put into practice all that I learned at RGU and helped me to forge a successful career in the hospitality industry."
