A Mathematics graduate from Aberdeen University, Sue completed an MSc in Information Analysis at the School of Information and Media in 1997, where her research topic was "The rural information need of the Shetland Islands Citizens Advice Bureau".

Sue then set up and ran a business information service for Shetland Enterprise, before returning to the School of Information and Media (now the Department of Information Management) to take up a research studentship in 2001. The topic of her PhD is "The relationship between access to information and the effects of peripherality (in the context of the Northern and Western Islands of Scotland)".

Sue also holds a Diploma in Local Economic Development from the University of Glasgow; she was President of the RGU Research Students' Association 2004-5 and is Vice Chair of the Shetland Islands Citizens Advice Bureau.

Sue is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Librarians and Information Professionals, and a member of the International Rural Network and the Regional Studies Association.
