After graduating with a BA (Hons) European Business Law (Abertay Dundee) and an LL.M. by research (Aberdeen) I worked as Lecturer in Law at The University of the West of Scotland (then Paisley) for five years.
I joined the Department of Law at Aberdeen Business School as a Lecturer in September 2004. In addition, I have been reading for a Ph.D. at the University of Edinburgh since September 2006.
Teaching responsibilities
My teaching commitments are spread over a number of courses. I currently deliver Contract Law, Consumer Law, Media Law and Intellectual Property Law on the LL.B. (Honours) and BA (Honours) Law and Management courses. Supervision of undergraduate dissertations is also part of my responsibilities.
Having benefited from EU exchange opportunities as a student, I am keenly interested in participating in the teaching exchanges which the Business School has with current partner institutions.
Additionally, I am Course Leader for the linked programmes noted below. On these, I supervise Masters dissertations and teach Intellectual Property Law related content:
Other Responsibilities
Since Summer 2008 I have fulfilled the role of ABS Learning Enhancement Co-ordinator (Postgraduate). This has enabled me to contribute to teaching, learning and assessment developments through participating at conferences (HEA, UKCLE) across the UK, as well as a number of key university (RGU) and ABS Committees, programme validation and review events. This role requires liaison and collaboration with colleagues both within the Business School and with university's Department of Enhancement of Learning, Teaching and Assessment (DELTA).
Research interests
While I undertake regular scholarly activities in all the fields that form part of my teaching responsibility in order to maintain a level of currency within those disciplines, my main research interests concern EU Constitutional Law and Intellectual Property Law.
Within the former, further EU integration by means of treaties and the effective enforcement of judgments handed down by the Court of Justice of the EU are areas I find particularly exciting. Within IP law, the notion of (joint) authorship in copyright law has had an even more gripping effect on my research preferences, culminating in the decision to embark on a Ph.D. – an often lonely and arduous journey, but one that is nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable!
In addition, I am keen on contributing regularly to IP/Copyright Law-related blogs e.g. The IPKat, as well as acting as reviewer/editor for specific journals. While I have had a function editing submissions to the Journal of International Trade Law & Policy since 2008, I have recently been invited to join the editing team of SCRIPTed (an online journal of Law, Technology & Society).
Finally, the role as ABS LEC sparked a growing interest in research into the provision of legal education in the UK. Here, the experience of international postgraduate students in respect of teaching, learning and assessment raise issues of particular concern.
